Artificial intelligence
Supporting human-led education
Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of a changing landscape in tertiary education. From personalised learning pathways to automated administrative tasks, AI promises to redefine teaching and learning for learners and practitioners alike. But harnessing the full potential of AI isn’t without its challenges – both ethical and technological – which need careful navigation.
Thanks to the support of a growing community of innovative and forward-thinking experts from across the UK’s education sector, we have developed resources and conducted pilots to support you and your path to effective and responsible use of AI in education.

Current pilots
Our pilots so far have included a range of exciting AI products including an AI assisted marking tool, a chatbot for student queries, and a virtual reality interview simulator.
AI in assessment
Beginning September 2025, we are running a year long AI in assessment project, bringing together two strands: trialling three tools specifically designed to support marking and feedback (Graide, KEATH, and TeacherMatic) and using general-purpose AI productivity tools (eg ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot) guided by a best practice toolkit. Both strands will explore how AI can support both formative and summative assessment in FE and HE, with a particular focus on reducing the marking and feedback burden without compromising quality.

Training
"AI is already transforming teaching and learning. It’s helping staff manage workloads effectively and enhancing student outcomes through improved engagement and personalised learning. Our aim is to guide UK education and research towards using the technology in the best possible way to meet the needs of students and staff by implementing AI safely, securely and ethically.”
